The city of San Francisco has given birth to a number of music genres over the past 50 years. One of the more unique sounds to come from the city was that which was created by Santana. The band, led by singer-songwriter Carlos Santana, formed in the city in 1967. Over the course of its 40-plus year existence the band has undergone a number of changes in personnel. The original members of the band included Carlos Santana, Marcus Malone, Rod Harper, David Brown, and Gregg Rolie.
Few bands in the music industry experienced the type of meteoric rise to fame that Santana enjoyed. Just two years after its formation, the very first Santana tickets were sold for a concert that took place as part of the Woodstock Festival in 1969. The band was still in the process of recording its debut album in 1969. Amazingly, the group completed production of its debut album in just one month and was ready to release it by the summer of 1969.
When Santana's debut album, entitled Santana, was released that year it garnered immediate attention for the group. The album would peak at #4 on the US Billboard 200 chart. "Evil Ways," a popular single off the album, went on to become a Top 10 single in the US that year. The sound that Santana is famous for has changed over the years. The group was one of the initial forces in Latin Rock in San Francisco, but Carlos Santana's association with Sri Chinmoy continually altered the group's music.
As Carlos Santana grew closer to Chinmoy, the group's sound drifted from a purely Latin Rock sound to encompass a number of genres ranging from Latin and Chicano rock to jazz rock and psychedelic rock. Today, the group maintains Latin influence in its music while still venturing into more esoteric musical styles. Throughout the changes in band personnel and sound, Santana ticket and album sales remained strong. As of 2013 the group has sold more than 90 million records worldwide.
By 1999 the group's fanbase had aged and the group was producing fewer albums as a result mediocre interest during the 1990s. However, since the turn of the 21st century the band has been dealing with increased interest in the group, its sound, albums, and Santana tickets. Since 2010 the group has produced three albums. When Guitar Heaven was released in 2010 it marked the first album release for the group in five years.
Santana followed up that album with two more new albums. The first, Shape Shifter, was released in 2012. The latest album, Corazon, was released on 6 May 2014. Responding to the demand for Santana tickets for concerts featuring the original lineup, Carlos Santana announced in 2013 that a reunion effort was underway. The reunion tour is expected to include all members of the original lineup, including Carlos Santana, Malone, Harper, and Rolie. The only missing member will be Brown, who passed away at the age of 50 in 2000.
Santana tickets are on sale for a number of tour events the group will be partaking in during the summer of 2014. The members of Santana are out on the road across playing events on both the 2014 Corazon Tour and Rod Stewart with Santana Tour 2014.
