John Legend began playing piano at the age of 4, singing in his church choir when he was 7. While later attending the University of Pennsylvania, Legend headed a co-ed a capella jazz and pop group, receiving critical acclaim for his lead vocals on a cover of Joan Osborne's “One of Us”. A friend introduced him to Lauryn Hill and she hired Legend to play piano on the track “Everything is Everything” which would be released on her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998. Shortly after graduating from college in 1999, Legend began writing, producing, and recording his own work. He continued to sell his self-titled demo at shows and send his work to record labels.
John Legend was introduced to the burgeoning hip-hop artist Kayne West in 2001 and was hired to sing during the hooks of West's music, then signed to West's label, GOOD Music. He debuted his first solo album in 2004, titled “Get Lifted”, which was quickly certified Gold, and was produced by top artists like West, Dave Tozer, and will.i.am. In 2006, Legend won a Grammy award for Best R&B Album, as well as two more grammies for Best New Artist and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Legend went on to cowrite a certified Platinum hit for Janet Jackson titled “I Want You,” and quickly became a highly desired collaborator. He has appeared on albums by such artists as Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, The Black Eyed Peas, and Fergie. 2006 brought the release of his second album, “Once Again,” which was certified Platinum and included the Grammy Award-winning single “Heaven”. His collaboration with other artists also won him another Grammy Award. Should this incredible and highly sought after musician sell out the show nearest you, AC Tickets will find the John Legend tickets you need, when you need them.
In 2008, Legend released his third consecutive Top 10 album, “Evolver”, which had a more dance and pop feel and featured Outkast's Andre 3000. In 2010, he was named BET Humanitarian of the Year for his work with The Equality Project, Stand for Children, Teach for America, and various other charities. He collaborated with The Roots to release the album Wake Up! in 2010, and won three more awards at the 2011 Grammy Awards. He provided soundtracks for the films Think Like a Man and Django Unchained in 2012.
Legend's self-proclaimed optimistic outlook on life and love is evident in his fourth studio release, “Love in the Future”, which was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. The hit single “All of Me” is Legend's first top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite concerns that a simple singer-and-his-piano love ballad wasn't edgy enough for fans. It is his most successful single to date, undoubtedly to be performed by Legend as he makes his way through the cities on his 2014 All of Me Tour itinerary.
